Purpose 2: Finding Your Purpose

Who am I? was a question we tackled in a previous post. Click HERE to check it out if you missed it. In this post, we’ll deal with a related question – one that often follows on the heels of the first.

What is my purpose?

And then, Do I have a divine destiny?

Let’s see what the God’s Word says on these matters. 1 John 3:1-3 says: See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. And, 2 Peter 1:3-4. His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

Those are but a few passages that discuss our call to become divine – to inherit our Father’s kingdom and nature. Once we declare our choice to claim that inheritance by believing in Jesus, declaring Him to be the only Son of God who died as a sacrifice for our sins and rose again in power, we are no longer the same being of dust and bone we once were. We become new creations. With new hearts, new minds, and eventually, new bodies.

Ezekial 36:26 says: And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

So what is our purpose? We are to become like Christ by aligning ourselves to Him and seeking to leave our past lives of sin behind. First and foremost, our purpose is to be children of God.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 6:33 ESV

So where does a divine calling come in? It comes after we accept our role as a child of God. After we seek our Father’s will and seek ways to serve Him. Once we’ve surrendered to Him, then we may pursue the passion He wove into the fabric of our beings ere we were born. And working in that passion with Him is the best gift of all.

When we can rely on Him to supply the direction and focus, the joy of creating grows exponentially. That doesn’t mean it isn’t hard or a struggle. It just means that the pressure is off. We don’t have to strive to please our Heavenly Father, because He is already pleased with us. Now, he waits to delight in our delight and gives gifts so we will smile.

Will he still allow trials to happen? Will we still have to push through barriers and struggle against those who’d wish to hold us back? Are there things we must learn before success can be achieved? Yes, a thousand times, yes. And, as my favorite band Rend Collective states in the lyrics to “Hallelujah Anyway

Even if my daylight never dawns. Even if my breakthrough never comes. I’ll fight to bring you praise. Even if my dreams fall to the ground. Even if I’m lost, I know I’m found. My heart will somehow say, “Hallelujah anyway.”

So what is our purpose? To be a child of God, then seek his will and remain within it.

Do we have a divine destiny? Yes. Yes, we do. And it will be more than we can dream or imagine.

So, my friends, if you don’t know the Jesus I’m speaking of, please find a Bible or a church or a friend who does and ask them how you might know Him as well. I’m praying for you. And if you do know Him, lean into what He’s speaking over you. You are special. You are wanted. You are His. Walk into your passion knowing He already approves of you. He already loves you more than you know. And nothing you can do will change that or dent His love for you.
