Whether or not you choose a Word for yourself every year, you’ve probably heard of others who do. If not, then let me introduce you to the concept. I actually believe both the process and the purpose of choosing One Word for a year varies with each person. It is an individualized, very personal act.
For some, it may be considered and prayed over for a long period. For others the Word may come in a whisper or a nudge of the Holy Spirit, or from song lyrics, scripture, or another suggestion from a friend or relative. Regardless the method of acquiring one’s Word, the purpose is similar: focus.
Focus may mean different things depending on one’s need and experiences. For me, finding and choosing One Word is a foreshadow of the coming year. It provides something for me to hone in on in my talks with God and for God to use to refine me throughout the year. A way to draw me closer and set me firmly on the path I’m to follow. I never know how God will use my One Word. Part of that depends on my willingness to follow His direction and leading. Part on His purpose for me at this point in my life.
How do you choose your One Word, if you choose one? What does it mean to you?
This year, my One Word is: Proclaim
My verse is from Isaiah 61:1-2 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the Year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn (NIV)
To me, this verse states all the various things associated with proclaiming: good news, freedom, light, the Lord’s favor and future return, and comfort. I’d add praise to this list as well. I want to be bold in the praise and acknowledgement of my God and his grace. I want people to know what I believe by seeing light and compassion in me. I want to be a walking billboard for the joy and peace abiding in Jesus brings to my life.
In order to proclaim like that, I will need to live according to God’s will. I will need to walk closer to Him than ever before. This is a yearlong challenge and will not be easy, but I undertake it with gladness. Will I stumble? Fall? I’m certain I will, but God will be there with an outstretched hand to help me up.
I can’t foresee the troubles 2024 will bring. Or the heartaches, joys, delights or celebrations. But whatever comes, the Lord most High sits on the throne and His will cannot be denied. Whatever happens, I pray good comes from it and I pray I maintain my vigilance and He lends me His strength for the journey.
