Enter Elite Equine Therapy stable where he volunteers as an equine specialist helping Zack Martin recover from the trauma surrounding his horrific burns. Sully’s a bit frustrated by his lack of progress in convincing Zack to ride, but once again, music is getting in the way. His recording sessions have been running over and making him late for his appointments – something Zack seems to take personally. And Sully doesn’t blame the kid. Why trust someone who’s proven to be unreliable?

Then, in the place Sully feels like his damaged vocal cords and past history can finally be put to rest, music intrudes in the form of a voice he can’t ignore. The stable girl’s singing captures his full attention – to the detriment of his concentration and desire to move past his obsession into a healthy relationship with the part of himself that continues to let him down and give in to his weakness.

Rhiann James is a recent Nashville transplant from tiny Crystal Haven, Montana via Bozeman where she was a barrel racer for the Montana State rodeo team – until she pushed too hard and hurt herself and her horse. Following her former best friend to Nashville to support her bid at country music stardom seems a good idea at the time. But perhaps she’d been running instead.

Still experiencing acute pain from her injuries and recently rendered homeless by the very friend she’d sought to support, Rhiann leans into her new job at Elite Equine and her new accommodations in a lovely East Nashville home she shares with two housemates she has worked hard to keep at arms’ length. It doesn’t do to let people in. They always end up getting hurt. Or she does. Either way, staying isolated is best and she loves that she can work behind the scenes as a stable hand, slipping from shadow to shadow without notice.

Until she’s drawn from the barn by a terrified horse who needs her help. Obviously abused in a prior life, the gray gelding is drawn to her patient understanding. She names him Shadow and is determined to discover more about his past despite her vow not to get emotionally invested in anything or anyone.

It isn’t long before her vow goes out the window. The Elite Equine staff is difficult to ignore, especially the tall equine specialist with his wind-blown hair and espresso eyes. But it’s the way he treats his young client that draws Rhiann’s attention. The empathy and compassion in his manner and expression that pulls her once again from her safe place in the shadows.

When funding issues create the need for a large-scale fundraising effort, Rhiann feels an inner push to volunteer, but when it’s the tall cowboy who’s heading up the committee, she pulls back. He’s too dangerous to risk working in close proximity, so she works with Penny, the only volunteer, handing her ideas gleaned from long bus rides and questioning her friends.

When circumstances throw Rhiann and Sully together, both on the fundraising committee and in the search for Shadow’s former identity, she can’t resist the draw to know him more fully.

But they both have secrets that could push them apart whether they choose to share or not. Each decision brings them closer to the cliff edge and one wrong move could send not only their budding relationship, but also Elite Equine, the clients and the horses, plummeting over the edge.
